Gignac Shines for France as Matuidi Praises – and Playfully Warns – Ligue 1 Rival
André-Pierre Gignac continues to make headlines for his red-hot form — this time on international duty. The Olympique de Marseille striker, currently Ligue 1’s top scorer, played a key role in France’s 3–0 friendly win over Armenia on Tuesday, delivering a lively performance that impressed both fans and teammates.
Among those lauding Gignac’s impact was Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Blaise Matuidi, who spoke with RMC after the match. While clearly pleased for his national teammate, Matuidi couldn’t resist a light-hearted jab aimed at their domestic rivalry.
“He’s made a very good comeback. He’s someone who’s full of confidence. Good for him,” Matuidi said. “I hope it doesn’t last too long at the club anyway… More seriously, I’m happy for him because he’s a good guy.”
The match in Yerevan marked another important step in Gignac’s resurgence on the international stage. Having been absent from France duty for over a year, his recall by manager Didier Deschamps was a nod to his prolific form at Marseille. Against Armenia, he not only showed sharp movement and tactical intelligence, but also demonstrated the kind of commitment and physical readiness that has made him a standout performer in Ligue 1 this season.
The 28-year-old’s return to Les Bleus comes at a time when France is experimenting with its squad ahead of hosting Euro 2016. With Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, and Loïc Rémy all in contention for attacking roles, Gignac’s recent performances have helped reinvigorate the competition up front.
For Matuidi and PSG, however, Gignac’s continued momentum is a double-edged sword. Marseille currently sit atop the Ligue 1 table, with Gignac’s goals playing a central role in their success. His form is undoubtedly good news for the French national team — but perhaps less welcome for rivals like PSG, as Matuidi cheekily hinted.
Still, camaraderie prevails when donning the national colours, and Matuidi made it clear that off the pitch, there’s respect and admiration between the two.
France’s win over Armenia was another promising sign for Didier Deschamps’ evolving squad. And if Gignac maintains this level, both for club and country, he could yet find himself a key figure heading into Euro 2016 — to the delight of Marseille, and the playful dismay of PSG.
