Matthias Jaissle tells Newcastle fans to blame him after Everton defeat

Newcastle United manager Matthias Jaissle accepted responsibility for his side’s 1-0 defeat by Everton and told frustrated supporters he should be held accountable after another poor display at St James’ Park.

The result was Newcastle’s fourth defeat in their past five matches in all competitions, with Thierno Barry’s early second-half goal giving Everton victory. Their night worsened in the closing seconds when midfielder Jacob Ramsey was sent off for a foul on Harrison Armstrong.

Newcastle were booed by their supporters at the final whistle and are now 13th in the Premier League. They have won only two of their past seven matches.

“After a performance like that I can understand. That’s the reality and I am responsible for that,” Jaissle said.

“We need to work on the things we need to improve and after today that is a lot.”

The defeat came only five days after Newcastle were beaten by Everton in the EFL Cup fourth round on Merseyside last week. Jaissle questioned the decision to allow Barry’s goal to stand, believing Fabian Schar had been fouled during the build-up.

However, the 38-year-old admitted Newcastle had not played well enough to merit a positive result.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t deliver. Over the whole 90 minutes it was not our game and our style of playing,” he said.

“We were not brave enough in possession, too many long balls. If you cannot deliver when it counts, then you don’t deserve to win.”

Jaissle admits confidence is an issue

The manager also conceded that a lack of confidence is affecting Newcastle’s squad, with both younger and more experienced players struggling to find consistency.

“There are certain moments with not too much confidence, not only with the young lads but also with the more experienced ones,” he added.

“It’s a difficult period. We also know you can only overcome that as a unit.”

Jaissle was appointed as Eddie Howe’s successor and is now under increasing scrutiny after Newcastle’s latest setback. He faces a crucial away match against Fulham on Saturday, with another disappointing result potentially increasing pressure on the club’s hierarchy to consider a managerial change during the international break.

Newcastle will return to action after that break against Premier League champions Arsenal.
