Mattéo Guendouzi has been linked with a surprise move from Lazio to Sunderland, with the Championship club reportedly considering a bid for the France–Morocco midfielder.

The 26-year-old, currently valued at €32.00m, is contracted to Lazio and plays in central midfield, but fresh rumours suggest Sunderland are exploring the possibility of bringing him back to English football. The speculation, surfaced on 25 November 2025, lists the switch as a potential move rather than a concrete negotiation, with the probability of it happening not yet defined.

Guendouzi’s situation at Lazio remains unclear from the available data, including whether his deal in Rome is close to expiry, raising the theoretical possibility he could become a free agent in the future. Any move to Sunderland would mark a return to a league structure he knows well from his time at Arsenal, although the current rumours place the Black Cats as the prospective destination from Serie A.

A product of Paris Saint-Germain’s youth system, Guendouzi moved through Lorient’s ranks before joining Arsenal in 2018, where his market value climbed as high as €50m during an impressive early spell in the Premier League. Subsequent loans to Hertha BSC and Marseille, followed by a permanent switch to the French club and then to Lazio, have given him experience in Ligue 1, the Bundesliga, Serie A and English football.

Born in Poissy on 14 April 1999 and standing at 1.85m, Guendouzi is a right-footed central midfielder whose dual French and Moroccan nationality adds further international appeal. With his market value currently listed at €32.00m, any deal involving Sunderland would require careful financial planning and would represent a significant statement of intent.

Should the move materialise, it could offer Guendouzi a fresh platform in England to reshape his career trajectory and reassert his reputation after a series of moves across Europe.
