In dire need of a win, South Africa wasted no time and scored after just 13 minutes into the first half.
Jody Ah Shene scored to shoot his team into the lead after he was set up by Shakeel April.
That goal separated the two teams at halftime before a pulsating encounter ensued in the second half.
Neo Rapoo scored to double the lead for South Africa in the 60th minute with an assist from Jody Ah Shene.
While Sierra Leone’s danger man, Momoh Ibrahim Kamara, would pull one back for the team nine minutes later, it was not enough to inspire a comeback.
A brace from Thabang Mahlangu in the final minutes of the game sealed a heavy 4-1 win for South Africa to earn the team all the three points.
The crucial victory has propelled South Africa to second in the Group A standings, giving the team a good chance of advancing to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Sierra Leone on the other hand are still top of the table with seven points and looks set to go through to the knockout phase.
