Marumo Gallants attacker Dino Ndlovu has taken a swipe at South African Premiership clubs for the meager salaries paid to players in the domestic scene.
The 35-year-old veteran forward has had stints with several clubs in the South African top-flight, featuring for Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSports United, Bloemfontein Celtic FC and others.
Ndlovu in an interview with Soccer Laduma criticized the unhealthy salaries paid to players playing their trade in the South African league.
While criticizing the clubs, the striker sung praises for Mamelodi Sundowns for prioritizing player welfare.
“From a sponsorship perspective, we have to give credit to the league’s management—they’ve done well to improve the financial situation of the championship,” said Ndlovu.
“But what hurts me the most is that while the league is growing financially, other football clubs still refuse to pay players fairly—they pay them peanuts. That’s what pains me the most.
That’s why you see such a huge gap between the top three teams in the PSL. Sundowns are on top because they invest in their players and their infrastructure. On the other hand, there are teams that want players to give everything on the pitch, but they still do not want to pay them.”
However, Dino Ndlovu has predicted his firmer outfit will rule the South African Premiership for the next six-seven years.
“In terms of league standards, I am absolutely convinced the championship will be a one-horse race for the next six or seven years, until teams realize that to attract good players, they need to invest—they need to pay players and invest in their own. You cannot neglect your own and expect good results.”
“But football-wise, it’s exciting. I’ve seen that we have some talented young prospects, and that inspired me to come back and share my experience with them.” He told Soccer Laduma.
Sundowns emerged as champions in the recently concluded campaign, marking their eight consecutive success in the top-flight.
