Martinelli in contention for Al-Hilal debut as Watkins prepares to start against Al-Shabab

Gabriel Martinelli has joined the Al-Hilal squad for Friday’s Riyadh derby against Al-Shabab, while fellow new signing Ollie Watkins is expected to start the Roshn Saudi League match.

Al-Hilal travel to face Al-Shabab at SHG Arena in the Saudi capital in the fifth round of the competition, with manager Simone Inzaghi deciding how quickly to introduce the Brazilian winger following his move from Arsenal.

According to Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadiya, Martinelli reported for the team’s training camp ahead of the derby and is expected to be included in the final matchday squad. Inzaghi is due to announce the selection shortly before kick-off.

Martinelli’s involvement comes less than 24 hours after Al-Hilal announced his signing from Arsenal. The transfer was reported to be worth 65m euros by media reports.

Watkins, meanwhile, is expected to be named in the starting XI, according to Saudi newspaper Al-Youm. The England striker joined Al-Hilal from Aston Villa and has already made his first appearance for the club.

He came on as a substitute on Tuesday and scored Al-Hilal’s third goal in a 3-0 victory over traditional rivals Al-Ahli at Kingdom Arena. That result gave Watkins an immediate impact in his first outing for his new side and established him as a likely starter for the meeting with Al-Shabab.

The latest team news gives Inzaghi two high-profile attacking options as Al-Hilal look to maintain their perfect start to the league campaign. Martinelli could make his debut from the squad, while Watkins is set to continue after opening his Al-Hilal account in midweek.

Al-Hilal are pursuing a fifth consecutive victory and are seeking to retain their position at the top of the table. They currently have 12 points, level on points with second-placed Al-Nassr but ahead on goal difference.

The Riyadh derby therefore offers Al-Hilal the chance to extend their winning run and preserve their advantage at the summit. Al-Shabab will host the league leaders at SHG Arena, with attention focused on whether Martinelli is selected for his first appearance and whether Watkins can follow his debut goal with another decisive contribution.
