Martin Demichelis backs Castello Lukeba after costly own goal against Manchester City

RB Leipzig head coach Martin Demichelis has defended Castello Lukeba following the French defender’s unfortunate own goal in their 3-2 Champions League defeat to Manchester City.

The 23-year-old centre-back inadvertently put City ahead in the 37th minute after turning Nico O’Reilly’s low cross into his own net at the Red Bull Arena.

Despite the costly mistake, Demichelis insisted that Lukeba had delivered an impressive performance and remained an important part of his defensive plans.

Speaking after Wednesday’s encounter, the Argentine coach refused to allow the own goal to overshadow the defender’s overall contribution.

“It was unfortunate, he played a great game. But these things happen in football. As a centre-back, as a goalkeeper, these things happen,” Demichelis explained.

The Leipzig manager also highlighted Lukeba’s potential and urged the young defender to maintain consistency as he continues developing.

“In my eyes, Caste’s performance was very good. I simply want him to remain consistent. He has a lot to offer as a young centre-back,” he added.

Demichelis further emphasised that the defender must quickly put the incident behind him.

“It’s unfortunate and he simply has to forget the own goal immediately,” the coach insisted.

Lukeba’s mistake proved costly in a closely contested encounter, although Leipzig responded impressively after the interval.

Ridle Baku equalised in the 49th minute before Enzo Fernández restored City’s advantage nine minutes later.

Antonio Nusa brought Leipzig level again in the 61st minute, but Erling Haaland scored the decisive goal in the 78th minute to secure all three points for the visitors.

Despite the defeat, Demichelis was pleased with his team’s overall performance and believes there are positives to take from the encounter.

Leipzig will now turn their attention to their upcoming fixtures, with Lukeba expected to remain an important figure in the team’s defensive setup.
