Marseille Rekindle Interest in Senegalese Defender Papy Djilobodji
Olympique de Marseille have reportedly renewed their interest in Senegalese centre-back Papy Djilobodji, with the player once again emerging as a potential reinforcement in Marcelo Bielsa’s defensive plans. Though earlier considered a secondary option behind midfield targets like Alexandre Song and Benjamin Stambouli, Djilobodji is now firmly back on the radar of the Ligue 1 club.
According to La Provence, Marseille’s management never fully closed the door on the Djilobodji deal, and his profile has now received the green light from Bielsa — a critical step in advancing any move under the Argentine’s meticulous approach. The Nantes defender, known for his physical presence and aerial strength, is seen as a valuable asset in Marseille’s bid to solidify their backline.
However, negotiations could prove challenging. FC Nantes president Waldemar Kita recently reaffirmed his club’s stance in Presse-Océan, stating, “We have no intention of parting ways with him.” The club views Djilobodji as a vital component of their defensive structure and are reportedly reluctant to consider any offers at this late stage in the transfer window.
Despite the resistance from Nantes, Marseille’s renewed interest underscores their urgency to add defensive depth. With Bielsa’s high-pressing system demanding both physicality and tactical intelligence, Djilobodji fits the mould of a centre-back capable of adapting to the Argentine’s rigorous style of play.
Whether Marseille can convince Nantes to reconsider their position — possibly with a late, improved offer — remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Papy Djilobodji is back in the spotlight at the Vélodrome.
