Marseille target Memphis Depay but wage demands threaten Ligue 1 return

Olympique de Marseille have reportedly opened talks over a possible move for Dutch forward Memphis Depay, but the deal faces a major financial obstacle due to the player’s wage demands.

According to Foot Mercato, Marseille’s new sporting management team, led by sporting director Grégory Lorenzi, has contacted the 32-year-old’s representatives as the club searches for attacking reinforcements ahead of the new season.

Depay available after Corinthians spell

Depay’s contract with Brazilian club Corinthians is set to expire on 31 July, making him a potential option for clubs looking to strengthen their frontline.

The Netherlands international joined Corinthians in September 2024 and has since made 79 appearances for the Brazilian side, scoring 20 goals and providing 15 assists.

During his time in Brazil, Depay also lifted several trophies, including the Brazilian Cup, further adding to his decorated career.

Salary demands create challenge

Despite Marseille’s interest, the financial terms required to complete the deal could prove too difficult for the French club.

The former Olympique Lyonnais forward is reportedly seeking wages that would make an agreement unlikely, despite Marseille’s desire to bring him back to Ligue 1, where he previously played between 2017 and 2021.

Depay earned recognition during his spell with Lyon, becoming one of the league’s most influential attacking players before moving on to other European challenges.

Marseille need attacking reinforcements

The pursuit of Depay comes at a difficult moment for Marseille, who are attempting to rebuild their squad after losing several important players.

The club have already parted ways with key attackers including Mason Greenwood and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and are yet to complete a new signing since the opening of the transfer window.

With preparations for the new campaign underway, Marseille will now have to decide whether they can find a financial solution for Depay or turn their attention to alternative targets.
