Marseille: Romao No Longer Seeks Exit

France – Togolese midfielder Alaixys Romao has emerged as a key figure for Olympique de Marseille this season, amid reported interest from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli Jeddah. The Saudi club reportedly offered Romao a net salary of nearly €2 million, significantly higher than his current earnings on the Canebière. Despite the lucrative proposal, the 30-year-old may remain with Marseille for the remainder of the campaign.

Marseille’s management has reportedly reached an agreement with the Saudi authorities for a transfer fee between €500,000 and €1 million. However, Romao appears inclined to stay in Ligue 1, partly influenced by the club’s injury crisis and his own desire to contribute to the team during a challenging period.

The Togolese midfielder has made 13 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, contributing one goal. His presence in the midfield has been instrumental in stabilising Marseille’s play amid a series of absences due to injuries. Sources suggest that Romao’s commitment to the team may have played a key role in his decision to defer a move abroad.

Marseille’s management had initially considered the Saudi offer as an opportunity to generate funds while balancing the squad, but the club’s current injury situation appears to have prompted a reassessment. Retaining Romao ensures experienced depth in midfield at a time when the squad is stretched and key players are unavailable.

Romao’s potential stay highlights the complex decisions players face when balancing financial incentives with professional responsibilities. While the offer from Al-Ahli Jeddah was financially attractive, the midfielder seems to prioritise sporting continuity and team stability over short-term gains.

If Romao remains at Marseille, he is expected to continue his role as a central figure in the club’s midfield, contributing both defensively and in attack. His experience and tactical awareness make him a valuable asset as Marseille seeks to maintain competitive form in Ligue 1 and other competitions.

The decision will have implications for Marseille’s winter transfer strategy, as retaining Romao reduces the immediate need to recruit additional midfield reinforcements. It also signals to the squad the importance of commitment and leadership during periods of adversity.

For Al-Ahli Jeddah, the potential loss of Romao represents a setback in their recruitment plans, but the club may continue to monitor the player for future opportunities. Meanwhile, Marseille supporters can take confidence in having an experienced and dedicated midfielder available for the remainder of the season.

As the transfer window progresses, Romao’s choice reflects a broader theme in football: balancing ambition, loyalty, and the dynamics of team needs. His potential contribution over the coming months could prove pivotal for Marseille’s ambitions in domestic and European competitions.
