Marseille attacking midfielder Ethan Nwaneri has affirmed a strong connection to Nigeria after completing a loan switch to the French outfit.
Nwaneri was farmed out on loan by Arsenal in the winter transfer window in search of regular playing time, having struggled for a place in the team despite showing glimpses of good performances.
The 18-year-old was born in England to a Nigerian father and an English-French mother, making him eligible to represent three countries at the international level.
Despite already featuring for England’s youth teams, Nwaneri has expressed pride in his Nigerian heritage.
During the interview, Nwaneri was asked about past Nigerian stars such as Taye Taiwo and Wilson Oruma, both of whom enjoyed spells with French club Marseille. His response was clear and confident.
“Yes, I know. I’m Nigerian, and I am here to help the team as much as possible,” Nwaneri said.
Since joining Marseille, the midfielder has racked up two appearances, scoring one goal in the process. He is expected to return to Arsenal after his loan spell in June.
