Marseille Aim to Stay Focused Ahead of Montpellier Clash
Marseille head into their Ligue 1 clash with Montpellier looking to extend their lead at the top of the table — but not seeking revenge.
Earlier in the season, OM suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Montpellier in their opening match at the Vélodrome. However, left-back Benjamin Mendy insists that payback is not the motivation.
“No, the word revenge wasn’t mentioned,” Mendy told reporters. “It’s just a game with three very important points for us, that’s all.”
Marseille currently top the Ligue 1 standings and sit 15 points ahead of Montpellier, who are in 10th place. Despite the sizeable gap, Mendy says the squad remains cautious.
“There’s no such thing as an easy team to bounce back against. Montpellier are a good Ligue 1 side. Offensively, they’ve got quality players like Mounier and Sanson. We’re OM — regardless of what happened in the first leg, we’re going there to win. We’ve studied them on video and we’re prepared.”
With Marseille out of all other competitions, the league title remains their sole focus.
“We’re top and autumn champions. We’ll do everything to stay there. If we win the title, it’ll be huge for all the people of Marseille,” Mendy added.
OM’s trip to La Mosson will be a key test of their title credentials as they look to maintain momentum in the second half of the season.
