Imbula Impressing at Marseille, Says Coach Anigo
Olympique de Marseille manager José Anigo has praised summer signing Giannelli Imbula, describing the young midfielder as one of the most naturally gifted players at the club.
The 21-year-old, who joined from Guingamp in a deal worth approximately €8 million, has made an immediate impression in his debut season at the Stade Vélodrome. Speaking on the club’s official website, Anigo highlighted Imbula’s standout qualities and potential for growth.
“He’s definitely the one with the most talent,” Anigo said. “When you see his ball control and acceleration—even in training—it’s quite rare to see that in such a young player.”
The Franco-Congolese midfielder signed a five-year deal with Marseille last summer and has quickly become a key figure in the team’s midfield setup. Known for his composure on the ball and ability to drive forward with pace, Imbula has added a dynamic element to Marseille’s transitional play.
However, Anigo emphasised the importance of consistency in the youngster’s development, urging him to maintain his level both in training and on match days.
“He has to show it every day and show it on match day,” the coach noted, pointing to the challenge of adapting to the expectations at a top-tier club like Marseille.
Imbula’s arrival was seen as a major coup for the southern French side, which has long prided itself on identifying and nurturing emerging talent. After a breakout season with Guingamp, where he helped the club secure promotion to Ligue 1, the midfielder attracted interest from several top clubs before choosing Marseille.
Currently sitting sixth in the Ligue 1 standings, Marseille will travel to face FC Nantes in their Matchday 35 fixture, looking to finish the season strongly and potentially secure European qualification.
As Marseille continue to rebuild and refine their squad, Imbula remains central to the club’s plans for the future—both as a promising talent and a symbol of the team’s ambitions.
