Marseille join race for free agent Senegal star Krépin Diatta
French giants Olympique de Marseille have reportedly entered the race to sign Senegal international Krépin Diatta ahead of the new season.
According to reports, Marseille are monitoring the availability of the 27-year-old, who is currently a free agent after leaving AS Monaco at the end of June.
Diatta’s current situation has made him an attractive option for several clubs across Europe, with Marseille particularly interested due to their need to operate within a limited transfer budget. The possibility of securing an experienced player without paying a transfer fee is understood to be a major factor behind their interest.
The Senegalese international’s versatility is another quality that has caught the attention of Marseille’s management. Capable of playing in several attacking and midfield positions, Diatta offers tactical flexibility and valuable experience that could strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s squad ahead of a demanding campaign.
His familiarity with Ligue 1 is also considered a significant advantage. Having spent several seasons in French football with AS Monaco, Diatta understands the demands of the competition and would require little time to adapt if he returns to the league.
Beyond domestic experience, the Senegal star also brings valuable European pedigree, having featured in major continental competitions, including the UEFA Champions League. His ability to perform on big occasions is one of the qualities that Marseille officials reportedly appreciate.
However, Marseille are not alone in their pursuit of the former Club Brugge player, with several clubs across Europe also showing interest in securing his signature.
In England, newly promoted Premier League side Ipswich Town are reportedly considering a move for Diatta as they look to strengthen their squad after earning promotion to the top flight. Everton are also believed to be keeping an eye on the situation and could attempt to convince the Senegalese attacker to continue his career in the Premier League.
German club Schalke 04, who have returned to the Bundesliga, are another team monitoring Diatta’s situation. The German side sees the experienced Senegal international as a player who could provide quality and leadership as they aim to establish themselves again among Germany’s elite clubs.
Diatta leaves Monaco after making 22 appearances across all competitions last season, continuing to contribute with his energy, work rate and attacking ability.
The winger also played an important role for Senegal at the recent FIFA World Cup, featuring in all four of the Teranga Lions’ matches and completing the full 90 minutes in each game, underlining his importance at international level.
With 64 appearances for the Senegal national team, Diatta remains a highly respected figure and one of the most experienced free agents currently available on the market.
Marseille’s financial situation could make the deal appealing, but the competition for his signature means the French club will need to move quickly if they want to secure the services of a player who combines Ligue 1 experience, European pedigree and international quality.
