Marseille coach Bruno Genesio provides positive injury update on Morocco star Nayef Aguerd
Marseille head coach Bruno Genesio has delivered encouraging news regarding Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd, confirming that the defender is making significant progress in his rehabilitation and could soon return to full team training.
The Atlas Lions centre-back has been sidelined since the end of last season after suffering a groin injury, which also ruled him out of Morocco’s recent World Cup campaign. However, Marseille have now received a major boost with Aguerd nearing a return to competitive action.
Speaking at a press conference held at the La Commandant training centre on Tuesday, Genesio revealed that Aguerd is following his recovery programme successfully and is expected to rejoin his teammates during the club’s pre-season training camp in the Netherlands at the beginning of August.
“There is good news regarding Nayef Aguerd; he is making good progress in regaining his fitness, and I hope he will be able to resume training with the group during the camp in the Netherlands,” Genesio said.
The Marseille coach’s update will come as a relief to the club, who view Aguerd as a key figure in their defensive plans ahead of the new season. The Moroccan defender’s leadership, physical presence and experience at both club and international level make him an important asset for the French side.
Genesio also explained that Aguerd’s potential return would provide an additional boost for Marseille’s defensive department, especially following the return of captain Leonardo Balerdi to full training.
Balerdi is expected to feature in Marseille’s friendly match against Nîmes, although his involvement could be limited to a few minutes as he continues building match fitness ahead of the new campaign.
Aguerd joined Marseille with a strong reputation after impressive spells in European football, and his absence has been felt as the club continues preparations for the upcoming season. His ability to read the game, win aerial battles and organise the defensive line has made him one of Morocco’s most respected defenders.
The former West Ham United and Rennes player has also been a crucial member of the Moroccan national team, playing a major role in the Atlas Lions’ historic achievements on the international stage.
With his recovery progressing well, Marseille will be hoping Aguerd can return to full fitness soon and play a leading role in their ambitions for the new season. His comeback would strengthen Genesio’s defensive options and provide the team with valuable experience as they prepare for domestic and European challenges.
