Marseille coach Bruno Genesio praises Nayef Aguerd’s impressive form
Marseille coach Bruno Genesio has expressed his satisfaction with the recent performances of Moroccan international Nayef Aguerd, praising the defender’s determination and gradual return to his best form following a difficult spell on the sidelines through injury.
The French tactician believes the centre-back is making encouraging progress after enduring a challenging period that disrupted his career and prevented him from competing at the highest level for several months.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Marseille’s Ligue 1 encounter against Lens in the 10th round of the French championship, Genesio acknowledged the difficulties Aguerd experienced during his recovery, insisting that returning to competitive football after such a lengthy absence was never going to be straightforward.
Missing out on such a major international tournament was a significant disappointment for Aguerd, considering the importance of the competition to every professional footballer and the opportunity it provides to showcase their abilities on the biggest stage.
The coach acknowledged that dealing with the physical and mental challenges associated with a lengthy injury required considerable patience and determination from the defender.
He further explained that Aguerd needed sufficient time to rebuild his physical condition and gradually regain the sharpness required to compete at the highest level after spending an extended period away from competitive football.
Genesio also reserved praise for Marseille’s medical department, recognising the important role played by the club’s medical personnel in supporting the Moroccan international throughout his rehabilitation.
The medical staff worked closely with the defender to help him overcome the effects of the injury and ensure that his return to action was handled carefully, with his long-term fitness remaining a priority.
Having previously worked with Aguerd during their time together at Stade Rennais, Genesio is familiar with the defender’s qualities and understands the level of influence he can bring to a team’s defensive structure.
The Marseille manager highlighted several attributes that make the 29-year-old an important player, particularly his physical strength, aerial ability, recovery speed and composure when playing the ball out from the back.
He believes Aguerd’s ability to dominate aerial challenges, cover defensive spaces and contribute to the team’s build-up play makes him a valuable asset in the heart of Marseille’s defence.
Beyond his individual qualities, Genesio also pointed to the experience the Moroccan defender has accumulated throughout his professional career, stressing that his understanding of the game and tactical awareness provide additional value to the squad.
The coach considers Aguerd an important component of Marseille’s defensive plans and believes his presence can make a significant difference as the team continues its campaign in the French top flight.
His gradual return to form is therefore being viewed as an encouraging development for the southern French outfit, who will be hoping the defender can maintain his progress and establish himself as a consistent performer in the coming weeks.
For Aguerd, the immediate priority will be to build on his recent performances, maintain his physical condition and regain the consistency that made him one of Morocco’s dependable defensive figures.
Genesio’s public backing also underlines the confidence Marseille have in the Moroccan international, with the coach expecting him to continue contributing his experience, defensive qualities and leadership as the season progresses.
