Marseille challenge Lille in pursuit of Malian defender Sikou Niakaté

Sikou Niakate

Olympique de Marseille have stepped up their interest in signing Sikou Niakaté, the Malian international centre-back who has enjoyed a stellar season in Portugal, as the club looks to bolster its defence ahead of key upcoming competitions.

Niakaté, currently under contract until June 2029, has emerged as a standout performer in the Primeira Liga.

His commanding displays have drawn attention from top-tier European sides, and according to sources cited by Africasoccer, Marseille are now actively negotiating with the player’s representatives in an attempt to secure his signature.

The French club views Niakaté as a direct replacement for Chancel Mbemba, whose departure has created a critical gap in the backline.

Born in Montreuil, France, Niakaté has evolved into one of the most reliable central defenders in the Portuguese league. His rise to prominence this season has significantly raised his profile, particularly following a series of strong performances that underlined his tactical discipline, aerial strength, and composure on the ball.

The 24-year-old’s form has not gone unnoticed, with Premier League giants Liverpool previously reported to be monitoring his situation.

While Olympique de Marseille appear to be leading the charge, they are not alone in their pursuit. Lille are also firmly in the race to land the defender.

A source close to the player confirmed that talks are ongoing with both French clubs, in addition to interest from other European sides, though no deal has yet been finalised.

Niakaté’s market value is currently estimated at €8 million, according to data from Transfermarkt, a figure that reflects both his current level and long-term potential.

For a defender of his calibre and age, the price tag is considered accessible by clubs seeking a dependable and versatile option to reinforce their back lines.

Marseille’s renewed interest in Niakaté comes as the club seeks to rebuild and reinforce its squad for the coming season.

With Chancel Mbemba’s exit looming large, club officials are prioritising defensive solidity. The Malian’s profile fits the bill perfectly: a physically imposing centre-back with European experience and international pedigree.

The growing competition for Niakaté’s services also places pressure on Lille, who have long been admirers of the player. While the northern French side hoped to secure a deal early in the summer window, Marseille’s entrance into the race complicates their efforts. Both clubs will now be looking to make a swift move to avoid being outpaced by rival suitors from elsewhere in Europe.

Though neither club has confirmed official bids at this stage, discussions are understood to be at an advanced level. With the summer transfer window approaching, Niakaté’s next move is likely to be determined in the coming weeks.

For Niakaté, the next step in his career could mark a return to French football—this time at a much higher level. Whether it is at the Stade Vélodrome or the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, the Malian international appears destined for a prominent role in Ligue 1 next season.
