Medhi Benatiistances himself from Himad Abdelli amid Marseille crisis
Marseille’s internal tensions have deepened as sporting director Medhi Benatia has reportedly moved away from supporting the signing of Himad Abdelli, a player brought in during the last winter transfer window under his recommendation.
According to La Provence, Benatia is understood to have raised concerns about Abdelli’s commitment levels at a critical stage of the season.
Those reservations are said to have been communicated during discussions in Nantes shortly before Marseille’s 3-0 defeat away to FC Nantes.
The reported change in stance marks a notable shift in position, as Abdelli’s arrival was initially viewed internally as a recruitment influenced directly by Benatia.
However, a combination of poor results on the pitch and growing frustration within the squad appears to have altered the mood around the midfielder’s role.
Tensions have also been heightened by Abdelli’s strained relationship with head coach Habib Beye. The Algerian international was previously removed from the matchday squad following a reported disagreement with the manager, further limiting his involvement at a time when Marseille have been seeking stability.
His absence has coincided with a dip in team performance. The defeat in Nantes, described as heavy, has further damaged Marseille’s hopes of securing European qualification, leaving the club under increasing pressure as the season approaches its conclusion.
Without Abdelli available, Marseille struggled to find control in midfield during that match, and the result has intensified scrutiny on both recruitment decisions and squad harmony.
What was once seen as a promising addition has now become part of a wider narrative of inconsistency and unrest within the squad.
The situation has also highlighted divisions within the club, where early confidence in certain signings is now being reassessed in light of recent performances.
Abdelli’s case, in particular, has come to symbolise the broader difficulties Marseille are currently facing, both on and off the pitch.
With expectations high at the start of the campaign, the club’s inability to maintain momentum has placed pressure on decision-makers and coaching staff alike.
As a result, previously backed transfer choices are now being questioned as Marseille look to stabilise their season.
The coming weeks are expected to be decisive, not only for Abdelli’s future involvement but also for the wider direction of the squad as Marseille attempt to recover from a turbulent spell.
