Marouane Chamakh has called on Moroccan supporters to put aside criticism of the national team’s playing style and unite behind Walid Regragui’s squad as they prepare to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The former Atlas Lions striker, renowned for his time at Arsenal and Bordeaux, delivered a candid message ahead of the tournament, defending the team’s tactics and urging fans to remain focused on results.
Speaking to Hespress, Chamakh acknowledged mounting scrutiny over Morocco’s performances but urged realism.
“We have to get back to reality,” he declared, stressing that the ultimate goal is winning the trophy. “If Walid brings us this cup, we’ll forget how we played. We’ll only remember the victory.”
Morocco’s hunger for a second continental title, its first since 1976, has heightened expectations, but Chamakh maintains that the current roster already demonstrates high potential. He asserted that winning is paramount, regardless of the method.
“The level is already very high,” he said, urging fans to refocus their energy on supporting the players. “Today, we need to gain confidence and win.”
With the 2025 tournament taking place on home soil, Chamakh believes national pride and collective spirit must outweigh tactical debates.
“We have to make sure this Cup stays here,” he added. “No matter how, what will count is the atmosphere, the state of mind, and the collective joy.”
Chamakh also underscored the emotional weight resting on the team, reminding players they carry the hopes of a nation.
“They must play knowing that a nation is behind them. They must try to bring back this Cup,” he urged, responding to recent criticism that included a campaign against coach Walid Regragui.
By urging unity and focusing on success, Chamakh hopes to defuse tension and inspire confidence within both the squad and its many supporters.
As the African Cup of Nations approaches, his message is clear: victory matters more than style, and legacy is won through silverware.
