Marouane Chamakh Announces Retirement from Professional Football
Former Moroccan international Marouane Chamakh has officially ended his football career. At 35 years old, the striker, who had been without a club since leaving Cardiff City in 2016, confirmed his retirement in an interview with beIN Sports on Sunday.
Chamakh reflected on his decision, saying, “It’s been two years since I’ve really been cut off from football. It was intentional. I wanted to be closer to my family. Today, I can say that I’ve truly withdrawn from football. I wasn’t planning on returning to football, whether as a consultant or coach, but I feel like it’s something I miss. I’m going to try to get my coaching badges. I’m going to do things little by little and seriously.”
A product of Bordeaux’s youth system, Chamakh enjoyed a successful career in France and England. He won the Ligue 1 title with Bordeaux in 2009 and later played in the Premier League with Arsenal (2010-2013), West Ham United (2013), Crystal Palace (2013-2016), and Cardiff City (2016).
Chamakh leaves behind a legacy as one of Morocco’s most recognizable forwards, remembered for his agility, aerial ability, and knack for scoring important goals. While his playing days have ended, the former striker plans to transition into coaching, beginning the next chapter of his football journey.
