Maroan Sannadi says he was overcome with joy upon learning of his first-ever call-up to the Moroccan national team, describing the moment as one of the most emotional of his career.
The 24-year-old Athletic Bilbao forward was among the names announced by head coach Walid Regragui on May 27 for Morocco’s upcoming fixtures against Benin and Tunisia, scheduled for June 6 and 9 in Fez.
The call-up marks a major milestone for Sannadi, who has long harboured ambitions of donning the national colours.
Caught completely off-guard, the Spain-based attacker said the news reached him while he was enjoying a holiday with close friends, including club teammate Nico Williams.
“I was on holiday in Greece with friends, in the same room as Nico (Williams). When I heard my name, I felt indescribable joy. I screamed with happiness and even woke him up, I was so moved,” Sannadi said in an interview with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation’s media team.
The moment carried extra weight for Sannadi, who just months earlier had publicly expressed his desire to represent the Atlas Lions.
In an interview with Spanish press back in February, he stated, “My big dream is to play for the Moroccan national team.” That dream is now reality, and the forward did not hide his pride at joining a squad filled with players he once looked up to.
“Wearing the national jersey has always been a dream of mine. Just a few years ago, I was watching the World Cup on television. Today, those players I admired have become my teammates. It’s a huge honour.”
Sannadi’s inclusion comes after a steady rise in La Liga, where he made 22 appearances this past season, scoring once and assisting three goals.
Despite limited minutes, his physical presence and work rate caught the attention of national selectors.
At 1.92 metres tall, Sannadi brings a commanding frame to Morocco’s attack, though he remains grounded about his role in a squad packed with talent.
“They are exceptional players and great friends, and even though the competition is strong, it remains healthy. My goal is simple: to fight for the team and give the best of myself to make Morocco shine.”
Sannadi’s debut could come as early as Friday against Benin, as Regragui tests his options ahead of more crucial fixtures on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
