Marmoush scores twice but Maresca leaves Manchester City exit door open

Enzo Maresca has indicated that Omar Marmoush’s future at Manchester City remains unresolved, with the Egypt international’s desire for more playing time likely to influence his decision.

Marmoush scored twice in City’s 3-1 friendly victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday, but Maresca said the forward’s lack of regular appearances last season could lead him to consider his options.

Asked by the Manchester Evening News whether Marmoush would remain at Manchester City, Maresca compared the situation with that of goalkeeper James Trafford.

“The answer must be similar to the answer I give about James Trafford. The players train every day and want to play, so when they do not play, they are not happy,” he said.

Marmoush’s two goals against Atletico Madrid were both created by Ghana international Antoine Semenyo, who repeatedly attacked the Spanish side’s right defensive flank. Algeria international Rayan Ait-Nouri completed the scoring for Manchester City after going through one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

Maresca said Marmoush’s experience from the previous campaign would be a factor in any decision about his future.

“Omar did not play much last season, so it is likely that his desire is to get more minutes. That does not mean he will not get more minutes here, but it also depends on his decision and on understanding his decision in detail,” the Manchester City manager added.

The comments come as Barcelona are reportedly holding intensive talks over a move for one of Manchester City’s leading players. The player is said to have informed his club of his wish to join the Catalan side, although Real Madrid are also targeting him.

Maresca was also asked about Spain midfielder Rodri, whose future has been the subject of transfer speculation. His response suggested the player remains expected to be with Manchester City in the immediate future.

“At the moment, he will be in Manchester on Wednesday,” Maresca said.

Manchester City are preparing to face Arsenal in the Community Shield next Sunday. The match will be the club’s first competitive fixture under Maresca, following the departure of legendary manager Pep Guardiola from the Etihad at the end of last season.

The Community Shield will therefore provide an early indication of Maresca’s plans, while Marmoush’s position is likely to remain a talking point after his two-goal performance. The Egyptian forward’s preference for increased involvement has been made clear, but Maresca stressed that the final decision will also rest with the player and depend on his understanding of the opportunities available at Manchester City.
