Marmoush ends 139-day wait with double as Egypt beat South Sudan

Omar Marmoush ended his 139-day run without a goal by scoring twice in Egypt’s 5-0 win over South Sudan in the second round of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Tuesday.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward struck in the 49th and 83rd minutes as Egypt moved to the top of Group B with four points.

Marmoush’s first goal for Egypt since 27 March came in a friendly against Saudi Arabia, which the Pharaohs won 4-0. Before Tuesday’s match, he had failed to score in nine consecutive international appearances, including five games at the 2026 World Cup.

The brace takes the 27-year-old’s international record to 13 goals in 57 matches.

It also brought an end to a goal drought that had extended across club and international football. Marmoush’s previous goal in all competitions came on 13 May, when he scored for Manchester City in a 3-0 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace in the 31st round of last season.

He had not found the net in any of his six appearances for Tottenham Hotspur since the start of the current campaign.
