Fulham head coach Marco Silva has shed light on why Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has yet to start a game since returning from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Bassey, a key figure at Craven Cottage over the past two seasons and the club’s player of the year last term, had been expected to reclaim his spot immediately upon his return.
However, Silva revealed that the decision to continue starting Jorge Cuenca is based on the Spaniard’s impressive form and the healthy competition it fosters within the squad.
Bassey had been a cornerstone of Fulham’s defence in the first half of the season, forming a strong partnership with Joachim Andersen at centre-back. His absence during Nigeria’s AFCON campaign in Morocco initially raised concerns, but the Cottagers thrived in his stead.
Cuenca stepped in seamlessly, showing composure and building a solid understanding with Andersen, which has made him a difficult selection to drop despite Bassey’s return.
Silva addressed the situation during a pre-match press conference, praising Bassey while defending his lineup choices.
“It’s a great thing for the team. I am the first one praising Calvin’s impact at the club, a great, great CB. Huge potential to keep growing,” Silva said. “Cuenca has stepped in and shown his qualities. It’s a competition; Cuenca knows the pro he’s up against.”
Since returning, Bassey has seen limited action, featuring only briefly against Manchester United after remaining on the bench against Brighton. With Fulham set to host Everton at Craven Cottage on Sunday, it remains to be seen whether Silva will rotate his defence.
