Marc Guehi found himself in unwanted territory on Wednesday night as he matched a Premier League record that has stood for over two decades.
The Crystal Palace centre-back accidentally scored an own goal during his side’s defeat to Newcastle United, becoming just the second player in league history to net own goals both home and away against the same team in a single season.
The only other player to do so is Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who recorded the same misfortune against Tottenham Hotspur in the 1998-99 season.
While Guehi’s moment at St James’ Park was unfortunate, the England international has remained a standout figure in Palace’s defence throughout the season. His consistency and composure have not gone unnoticed, with former club Chelsea reportedly plotting a move to bring him back to Stamford Bridge this summer.
The 24-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s most reliable defenders, and despite this record, his overall performance levels continue to draw praise.
