Manchester City defender Marc Guehi has admitted he was puzzled by the boos he received during Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

The England centre-back faced a hostile reception throughout the match, which saw Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland score late goals to secure a comeback for City.

Guehi’s reception is linked to last summer’s transfer saga, when he was on the verge of joining Liverpool before Crystal Palace pulled out at the last minute.

Speaking after the game, Guehi said he struggled to understand the anger from Liverpool supporters over circumstances beyond his control.

“Yeah, I’m not sure why, to be honest. But I can’t control what their fans think of me. I’m just grateful to our fans for sticking by me and supporting me the whole game,” he said.

Guehi also reflected on the intensity of playing against a team that presses high. “It’s not easy. Fans are on top of you. You might make a mistake, but the next one. Always focused on the next action and how you can help your teammates.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot suggested Guehi avoided a “clear red card” for a shirt pull on Mohamed Salah, adding to crowd frustration. Meanwhile, City remain six points behind Arsenal in the Premier League, aiming to close the gap and secure a Champions League spot.
