Belgian coach Marc Brys has returned to Cameroon after his European tour, setting his sights on preparing the Indomitable Lions for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde and Angola in June.
During his trip, Brys engaged with key members of the team, including goalkeeper André Onana and seasoned Bayern Munich striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting.
Reports suggest that the interactions were positive, signaling a promising start to Brys’ tenure.
However, one notable absence from Brys’ agenda is the inclusion of French youth international Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt.
While Brys supervised Ekitike, his immediate integration into the squad does not appear to be a priority at this stage.
Brys’ return to Cameroon comes amidst a backdrop of uncertainty regarding his appointment.
Despite being imposed by the government, Brys lacks recognition from the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) and its president, Samuel Eto’o, who was not consulted before Brys’ selection.
In response to the controversy, Brys has sought clarity and validation from Eto’o and Fecafoot.
Although Eto’o initially resisted Brys’ appointment, a recent meeting with the sports ministry seems to have softened his stance.
Nevertheless, Eto’o is keen to retain influence over the selection process.
A crucial meeting between Brys and Eto’o is scheduled for May 7, offering a potential resolution to the ongoing dispute.
Brys, who has expressed openness to engaging with Eto’o, hopes that the meeting will bring clarity to the situation and pave the way for a unified approach to Cameroonian football.
As Brys navigates the complexities of his role and seeks to establish his authority, the outcome of the upcoming meeting holds significant implications for the future of the Indomitable Lions.
