Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa Linked with Return to Ligue 1 as Lyon Express Interest
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, the versatile 25-year-old French international defender currently contracted to Newcastle United until 2018, appears to be edging closer to a return to Ligue 1, with Olympique Lyonnais emerging as a potential destination.
After struggling to secure regular playing time at Newcastle since his €8 million transfer from Montpellier in January 2013, Yanga-Mbiwa has been linked with several French clubs, including Marseille, Lille, and Bordeaux. However, recent reports from Eurosport suggest that Lyon have opened negotiations, with initial feedback from both parties described as positive.
Lyon are reportedly keen to add a defender with Yanga-Mbiwa’s blend of youth and experience to their squad, while the player himself is understood to be interested in a move back to France to revive his career and push for a recall to the French national team.
The transfer, however, faces a significant hurdle as Newcastle are firm in their valuation of the defender, reportedly demanding a minimum of €8 million for his services. This asking price could prove a sticking point for Lyon, who may reconsider their pursuit unless a player exchange deal can be arranged to offset the cost.
Since joining Newcastle from Montpellier, where he was captain and a key defensive figure, Yanga-Mbiwa has struggled to establish himself in the Premier League. He has been deployed sporadically, including some appearances out of position at left-back, and has made just 17 starts across two seasons.
The lack of consistent playing time has stalled his development and dimmed his prospects with the French national team, making a move back to Ligue 1 an attractive option to regain form and confidence.
For Lyon, securing Yanga-Mbiwa would add depth and versatility to their defence as they prepare for the upcoming season. The club’s ambition to compete domestically and in Europe means bolstering the squad with experienced but still youthful players is a priority.
The coming weeks will reveal whether Lyon can meet Newcastle’s valuation or negotiate a more favorable deal to bring the French defender back to his home league.
