Manchester City have underlined their intent in the transfer market with the high-profile signing of Antoine Semenyo, a move Pep Guardiola believes reflects both long-term planning and fierce competition at the elite level.
The Premier League champions completed a £64 million deal for the Bournemouth winger on Friday, beating several domestic rivals to secure one of the league’s most dynamic attacking options.
Semenyo’s arrival adds immediate depth and versatility to Guardiola’s squad. At 26, the Ghana forward is already well versed in the demands of the Premier League and is expected to be involved quickly, with a place in the squad for Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie against Exeter City.
A potential league debut could follow next weekend in the Manchester derby, underlining how rapidly City see him fitting into their system.
“Many clubs wanted him and he decided to join us so all I can say is thanks to him,” the City manager said.
City’s admiration for Semenyo has been long-standing. “We are very pleased. [For] a long time, we follow him,” Guardiola added.
“Everybody knows the qualities. He was extraordinary at Bournemouth and he can play on both sides, right and left. He can play as a striker as well with his pace. He knows the Premier League.”
