Manchester United star Bryan Mbeumo named Cameroon captain ahead of AFCON 2027 qualifiers

Cameroon head coach David Pagou has handed Bryan Mbeumo the captain’s armband ahead of the Indomitable Lions’ opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Comoros.

Mbeumo will take on the leadership role in the absence of Nouhou Tolo and Devis Epassy, who were both left out of Cameroon’s squad for the current international break.

The Manchester United striker will now be responsible for leading his teammates when Cameroon begin their campaign at home against the Coelacanths at the Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua.

The appointment places greater responsibility on Mbeumo, who will be expected to provide leadership both on and off the pitch as Cameroon seek to make a winning start to their qualification campaign.

With the Indomitable Lions aiming to secure their place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, Pagou will be hoping Mbeumo can combine his attacking responsibilities with the demands that come with wearing the captain’s armband.

The opening fixture against Comoros will provide Mbeumo with his first opportunity to lead Cameroon under Pagou, as the striker looks to guide the team through the opening stage of their qualification journey.

Cameroon will be targeting a positive result in Garoua before turning their attention to their next assignment. Following the Comoros game, the Indomitable Lions are scheduled to travel to Brazzaville to face Congo’s Red Devils in their second qualifier.

Cameroon will also have an international friendly against Côte d’Ivoire in Abidjan on October 3, providing another opportunity for Pagou to assess his squad ahead of the remaining challenges.

For now, however, the focus remains firmly on Comoros, with Mbeumo preparing to lead the Indomitable Lions for the first time as captain in what promises to be an important opening night in their pursuit of AFCON 2027 qualification.
