Manchester United squad overhaul could see Bruno Fernandes and three others leave in 2027
Manchester United could part company with four high-profile players in the coming months as the club considers major changes to its squad following a disastrous start to the 2026-27 season.
Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford have all been identified as potential departures, according to Football Insider. Their exits would form part of a wider reshaping of the squad that could take place at Old Trafford in 2027.
United are currently enduring a difficult spell under Michael Carrick. The club have gone nine matches without a win in all competitions and sit 17th in the Premier League, increasing the pressure on both the team and the manager’s position.
Fernandes’ situation is particularly uncertain because he is entering the final year of his contract with Manchester United. The Portugal international is 33, according to football finance expert Stefan Borson, who believes the departure of several high earners could help ease the club’s financial commitments.
“Bruno Fernandes (33) could potentially leave at the end of the season, and Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford could also depart,” Borson said in comments reported by Football Insider.
“That would be a positive for the wage bill in terms of reducing costs.”
However, Borson warned that losing four established players would create a significant recruitment challenge for Manchester United. The club would need to replace a substantial portion of its squad while operating in a transfer market where the leading players can now cost as much as £100m.
Avoiding that level of spending, he said, would require exceptional work in identifying and completing new signings. The potential departures could therefore reduce United’s wage costs, but would also leave the club facing the difficult task of rebuilding its squad without necessarily paying premium prices for replacements.
Any change would come against the backdrop of a season in which Manchester United’s results have fallen sharply. Their run of nine games without victory has left them close to the bottom of the Premier League table and intensified scrutiny of the club’s direction under Carrick.
With Fernandes’ contract situation unresolved and uncertainty surrounding Maguire, Shaw and Rashford, the coming months could prove decisive for the futures of four prominent Manchester United players.
