Manchester United revive interest in Barcelona defender Jules Kounde

Manchester United are considering a January move for Barcelona and France defender Jules Kounde as they look to strengthen a defence that has struggled during the opening rounds of the league season.

Kounde, who can play at centre-back or right-back, has returned to the club’s list of potential targets. United are monitoring his situation alongside Paris Saint-Germain, who are also assessing their defensive options.

According to Sports Mole, Paris Saint-Germain see Kounde as a possible long-term successor to their captain, Marquinhos, who is 32. The French club also believe he could provide competition at right-back behind Achraf Hakimi, who is 27.

Kounde’s position at Barcelona may need to be resolved soon, with the player no longer regarded as a regular starter by the club’s manager. That has left Barcelona facing the prospect of retaining a highly paid player whose role has diminished to a place on the substitutes’ bench.

The 13m euros-a-year salary Kounde receives is also a factor for Barcelona. The club are seeking to reduce their wage commitments to create more room within their player and squad salary cap.

Marca reports that Tottenham, Bayern Munich and Arsenal have also been following Kounde’s situation since August.

Kounde joined Barcelona in 2022 from French club Bordeaux.
