Manchester United players opted out of wearing an Adidas jacket in support of the LGBTQ+ community ahead of their Premier League match against Everton.
The decision came after defender Noussair Mazraoui expressed his unwillingness to participate in the initiative, citing his Muslim faith as the reason.
For the past two seasons, during the Rainbow Laces campaign, Manchester United players have donned pride-themed jerseys and jackets to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
However, this year, the team had planned to wear only a walk-out jacket. Following Mazraoui’s refusal, the players collectively decided not to wear the tracksuit at all, so he would not be singled out.
This decision was made hours before the Sunday match, prompting mixed reactions within the dressing room, as not all players agreed with the choice.
Manchester United has been actively working to foster a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ staff and fans. The club’s supporters’ group, the Rainbow Devils, was established in 2019, highlighting their commitment to this cause.
Recently, during the Rainbow Laces campaign, the club shared a video featuring players Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire discussing inclusivity with Rainbow Devils fans.
Additionally, captain Bruno Fernandes emphasized the importance of making supporters feel respected and included, describing his rainbow captain’s armband as a gesture of support for LGBTQ+ fans.
