Manchester United could use Carlos Baleba at left-back

Manchester United could use incoming signing Carlos Baleba as an emergency left-back next season if they cannot secure a specialist before the transfer deadline.

The £65 million Brighton midfielder is expected to complete his Old Trafford move shortly, though an ankle-ligament injury will delay his debut.

Baleba is naturally a central midfielder and has not played left-back in senior football. However, his left-footed profile, physicality and defensive instincts could persuade manager Michael Carrick to consider the Cameroon international in an unfamiliar role if squad needs demand it.

United originally targeted competition for Luke Shaw, with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall identified as a leading option. Newcastle are reluctant to sell the 21-year-old and have reportedly begun talks over a new contract, forcing United to assess alternatives.

Club Brugge defender Joaquin Seys and Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde have also been considered. Yet time is running short before the September 1 deadline, and no natural deputy for Shaw is established within the first-team group.

Baleba has experience at centre-back from his Brighton spell and could offer useful flexibility. Once fit, he is primarily expected to compete in midfield with Kobbie Mainoo, Mason Mount, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, while United prepare for Champions League football.
