Manchester United maintain long-standing interest in Carlos Baleba
Manchester United remain interested in Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with reports suggesting that an agreement in principle reached in 2025 is still technically in place.
The 22-year-old Cameroonian international was the subject of negotiations between the two clubs during the 2025 summer transfer window, with Manchester United believed to have agreed terms verbally with the player at that time. However, a deal was not completed, and Baleba remained at Brighton.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, the agreement between the player and Manchester United has not been fully dismissed and continues to exist in principle, despite the passage of time and stalled negotiations.
At the centre of the breakdown was Brighton’s valuation of the midfielder. The Premier League club were initially demanding in excess of €117 million (£100 million) for Baleba, a figure Manchester United considered too high and ultimately refused to meet. As a result, discussions were put on hold.
Since then, circumstances appear to have shifted. Baleba’s form this season has reportedly been inconsistent, and his valuation is now believed to have dropped significantly.
Brighton are said to be open to negotiating a fee closer to €59 million (£50 million), less than half of their original asking price.
Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, reiterated United’s continued interest, stating that recruitment staff still view Baleba as a target.
He also confirmed that the earlier understanding between the player and the club remains relevant going into 2026, with the midfielder still open to a move to Old Trafford.
However, several factors remain unresolved before any transfer can progress. Manchester United are yet to appoint a permanent manager, with the position currently held on an interim basis.
The club’s financial planning is also under scrutiny following significant spending in recent transfer windows. In addition, Brighton’s stance could change if rival clubs enter the race.
Former Cameroon international Jean II Makoun has also expressed support for a potential move, further adding to speculation around the midfielder’s future.
For Manchester United, the situation represents an opportunity to strengthen a midfield that has been under pressure, with Baleba viewed as a long-term option due to his Premier League experience and development potential.
