Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that the club has denied Kobbie Mainoo’s request to leave this summer, insisting the 19-year-old must remain and compete for his place in the squad.
Mainoo, who appeared in United’s 2-0 EFL Cup defeat to Grimsby Town on Wednesday, had reportedly requested a move following a challenging start to the season.
Interest from European clubs, including Napoli, had fueled speculation about the English midfielder of Ghanaian descent leaving Old Trafford.
Speaking ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Burnley at Old Trafford, Amorim was clear on the club’s stance.
“I want Kobbie to stay,” the Portuguese gaffer said.
“We need Kobbie, but he needs to fight for his place, and my position is not going to change,” he added.
Mainoo, who was previously linked with Chelsea in January before that move collapsed, has already established himself as a key member of the first-team setup. He has made 73 senior appearances for the Red Devils, contributing seven goals and three assists.
Under contract until June 2027, with an option for an additional year, Mainoo remains a long-term asset for the club. His current market value is estimated at €50 million, reflecting both his potential and performances.
