Manchester City step up Enzo Fernandez interest with Chelsea approach

Manchester City have made an official approach to Chelsea over the potential signing of midfielder Enzo Fernandez during the current summer transfer window.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that Manchester City had contacted Chelsea directly, marking the first time the club has formally approached its Premier League rival about Fernandez since the start of the summer.

“BREAKING: Manchester City have officially approached Chelsea club-to-club for Enzo Fernandez!” Romano wrote on X.

He later added that Manchester City had officially contacted Chelsea to open negotiations for the Argentina international, with discussions now under way between the two clubs.

“Manchester City have officially contacted Chelsea for the first time this summer to start negotiations over the signing of Enzo Fernandez, and talks are currently ongoing,” Romano said.

Fernandez is now waiting for the outcome of those discussions before learning whether a move to Manchester City can progress.

“The Argentine player is waiting for the final decision from the talks between the two clubs… the deal is still possible,” Romano concluded.

The report does not state that an agreement has been reached, nor does it indicate that Chelsea have accepted Manchester City’s proposal. At this stage, the clubs are understood to be engaged in negotiations, while Fernandez awaits the final verdict.

Romano’s initial update described the development as an official club-to-club approach from Manchester City, rather than informal interest. The contact therefore represents the opening of direct discussions between the two sides over the midfielder’s possible transfer.

The report also makes clear that this is Manchester City’s first formal move for Fernandez this summer. The next step will depend on the outcome of the negotiations with Chelsea, with the proposed deal remaining possible but not yet concluded.

Fernandez’s involvement in the process is currently limited to awaiting the decision reached by the two clubs. No final outcome has been reported, and the transfer remains at the discussion stage.
