Manchester City match Guardiola record with six straight wins under Enzo Maresca

Manchester City began the Premier League season with six consecutive victories for only the third time in their history after beating Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday evening.

The result kept City at the top of the table on 18 points, while Liverpool remain ninth with nine points.

According to Stats Foot, City had previously won their opening six matches of a top-flight season in 2016-17 and 2023-24. The statistic was published on 11 October 2026.

The start also sees Enzo Maresca match what Pep Guardiola achieved in his first season in charge of Manchester City. Guardiola led the club to six successive victories at the beginning of the 2016-17 campaign, before repeating the feat in 2023-24.

Guardiola left Manchester City at the end of last season, with the club’s hierarchy appointing Italian coach Enzo Maresca, the former Chelsea manager, as his successor.

Liverpool had gone into the match unbeaten in their first five league fixtures, recording two wins and three draws. Their resistance ended after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute.

Manchester City took advantage of the extra space and opened the scoring three minutes later through Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, their leading goalscorer.

Jeremy Doku doubled the visitors’ advantage just three minutes after Haaland’s goal, before Rayan Cherki completed the scoring in the 78th minute.

The victory gave City a perfect opening to their campaign and maintained their position at the summit, while Liverpool’s unbeaten start came to an emphatic end.
