Mangala Responds to Critics: “I’m My Own Biggest Critic”
Despite being the most expensive defender in the world following his €54 million move from FC Porto to Manchester City, Eliaquim Mangala is still adjusting to life in the Premier League.
The Congolese-born Frenchman has struggled at times to cement a consistent spot alongside Vincent Kompany, especially against physical English sides like Hull City and Crystal Palace. Speaking to Daily Mail, Mangala admitted the adaptation hasn’t been easy:
“We talked about it with Demichelis and Kompany… They told me that here defenders are constantly under pressure, that it’s physical and tough. But until you play, until you see it with your own eyes, you don’t really realize it.”
While he thrives in high-level matches such as against AS Roma in the Champions League, Mangala confessed that the direct style of some English teams presents a different challenge:
“I still struggle against teams with an English style of play—long balls, constant duels. I have to get used to it.”
Mangala remains calm under media criticism and determined to adapt:
“I know the media criticize me, but I’m calm. If you can’t handle the pressure, you’re not cut out to be a footballer. I’m my own biggest critic. I know I’m improving and adapting as I go along.”
City fans will hope that Mangala’s confidence and work ethic will soon translate into consistent top performances.
