Man Utd draw up striker shortlist as Joshua Zirkzee exit could trigger late transfer twist
Manchester United are drawing up plans for a new striker as they assess the possibility of Joshua Zirkzee leaving Old Trafford before the transfer window closes.
The Dutch forward remains part of United’s plans for now, but his future could become one of the key factors shaping the club’s late transfer activity. Juventus are understood to have identified Zirkzee as a prime target if Jonathan David leaves Turin, while Napoli have also been linked with the 23-year-old.
Should Zirkzee depart, United are expected to move for a replacement, with the club already monitoring a number of forwards.
United’s transfer business this summer has strengthened their midfield, but the club have yet to complete all the additions they had targeted. A new left-back and another midfielder remain possibilities, while the attack could now become the biggest area to watch before the deadline.
Mateta offered as United weigh options
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is among the forwards who have recently been offered to United.
However, there has been no significant progress towards a deal for the Frenchman, with United continuing to assess their options rather than committing to a move.
The club are understood to have a shortlist of forwards they could pursue if Zirkzee leaves, while they could also react to opportunities that emerge in the market during the final stages of the window.
The possibility of Zirkzee’s departure therefore remains central to United’s thinking. While there is no indication that the club are actively pushing him towards the exit, Juventus’ interest could change the situation quickly if David’s future is resolved.
Rashford could complicate attacking plans
Marcus Rashford’s situation could also influence United’s decision-making in attack.
The club did not initially expect the England international to play a major role this season, but sources say his attitude and demeanour since returning have been positive.
Rashford is expected to begin the campaign as a substitute if he stays, although his performances and approach could gradually earn him a more prominent role in Ruben Amorim’s attack.
Barcelona, where Rashford spent last season on loan, continue to monitor his situation. The Catalan club could make another approach if their alternative attacking targets fail to materialise.
