Manchester United are exploring a move for Rennes forward Mohamed Kader Meite as uncertainty continues to surround the future of Joshua Zirkzee, who is pushing for clarity on a possible departure before the transfer deadline.
The interest in Meite reflects United’s longer-term recruitment strategy, even as short-term decisions loom in attack.
Meite, an 18-year-old of Ivorian descent, has emerged as a serious option after impressing United scouts in Ligue 1. Valued at around €30 million, the Rennes forward is the subject of exploratory discussions as United assess whether a deal can be completed before the window closes.
Sources indicate the teenager first came onto United’s radar during scouting trips to monitor Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, who has also attracted attention from Chelsea.
Although Meite has been eased into first-team football this season, largely featuring from the bench, his output has been notable. He has recorded five goal contributions in limited minutes, averaging one involvement every 106 minutes.
His blend of physical presence, movement, and finishing has appealed to United’s recruitment team, who see him as a profile that fits the club’s evolving squad model. United are increasingly focused on combining Premier League-ready players with high-ceiling prospects capable of developing into long-term assets.
While United look ahead, Zirkzee’s situation remains unresolved. The striker, who is of Nigerian descent, is awaiting a decision on whether he will be permitted to leave before the deadline.
Having endured an uncertain spell at Old Trafford, Zirkzee understands that his long-term role under the current setup is unclear and is open to a move if the right opportunity arises.
Serie A is believed to be his preferred destination, with several Italian clubs monitoring his availability. Zirkzee’s camp is understood to be keen on a move that offers regular football and a defined role, factors that have been inconsistent since his arrival in Manchester.
