Mamelodi Sundowns turn focus to Milford after reaching MTN8 final

Mamelodi Sundowns defender Malibongwe Khoza says the club were determined to reach the MTN8 final to answer criticism that they do not place enough emphasis on domestic competitions.

Sundowns secured their place in the decider by overcoming Golden Arrows across two semi-final legs. It is only the sixth time in their history that they have reached the MTN8 final.

Their reward is a meeting with the competition’s most successful club, Orlando Pirates, at a venue yet to be confirmed on 10 October.

“It [reaching the MTN8 final] feels amazing because it’s something that we’ve always wanted to achieve, especially since a lot of people are complaining that we don’t put enough focus on local competitions, so we made sure that we reach the final and we will try to win it,” Khoza said.

Sundowns cannot afford to dwell on their cup success, with their immediate attention turning to Wednesday’s league match against newcomers Milford at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Milford have made an encouraging start to life in the league, winning two of their first four matches. They have also recorded one defeat and one draw, suggesting they could become one of the season’s surprise packages.

Khoza expects Sundowns to face an energetic side that will look to attack quickly on the counter, but believes the home team are prepared for the challenge.

“We are expecting a very energetic team, a very counter-attacking team. However, we are ready for them, and we will give our all for our supporters,” Khoza said.

Sundowns will be involved again on Sunday when they travel to face Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium in a 3pm league fixture.

The week’s other league matches begin on Wednesday, with Sundowns hosting Milford at Loftus at 7.30pm.

On Friday, Gallants play Polokwane at Royal Bafokeng, while Richards Bay meet AmaZulu at Princess Magogo. Both matches are scheduled for 7.30pm.

Saturday’s programme starts with Chippa against Milford at Nelson Mandela Bay at 3pm. Sekhukhune then face Galaxy at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium at 5.30pm.

On Sunday, Arrows host Sundowns at King Zwelithini Stadium at 3pm, before Chiefs play Siwelele at Dobsonville at 5.30pm.

In the Caf Champions League, Orlando Pirates travel to Mauritius to face La Cure Sylvester at the Cote d’Or National Sports Complex on Sunday. Kick-off is at 1.30pm.

The Caf Confederation Cup schedule includes Durban City’s home match against Rukinzo of Burundi at Moses Mabhida on Sunday, with the game starting at 3pm.
