Mamelodi Sundowns have shifted their attention to the impending FIFA Club World Cup tournament following CAF Champions League final setback.
The South African giants fell to the Egyptian giants in the two-legged final, undermining their quest of lifting the covetous trophy since 2016.
In a high-stake second leg clash held at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium, Pyramids prevailed with a 2-1 victory over Sundowns, completing a 3-2 aggregate win for the Egyptian club.
Pyramids opened the scoring through DR Congo star Fiston Mayele in the 24th-minute as the host went to the halftime break with the advantage.
After the break, the host continued their dominance in the match, scoring their second goal through Ahmed Samy in the 56th-minute mark.
In the 75th-minute, Sundowns pulled one back through Iqraam Rayners but it wasn’t enough to salvage his outfit from defeat.
Before the return clash, both teams had settled for a 1-1 draw at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.
Having missed out on the Champions League title, Sundowns will now turn their attention to the revived FIFA Club World Cup tournament to be staged in the USA. The much-anticipated clash will commence on June 14, 2025.
The South African outfit are paired in Group F against Fluminense, Dortmund, Ulsan HD. Sundowns will have to stay grounded in order to make impact at the tournament.
