Mamelodi Sundowns to share entire $6m CAF Champions League prize money in historic team bonus gesture

Mamelodi Sundowns have taken the extraordinary step of distributing their entire CAF Champions League prize money among players and technical staff following their continental triumph.

Sundowns secured their second continental title with a 2-1 aggregate scoreline against Moroccan side AS FAR.

The South African champions will share the full USD 6 million windfall as bonuses, reinforcing a long-established philosophy at the club that prioritises collective reward over individual gain.

The decision is rooted in policies first introduced during the leadership era of Dr Patrice Motsepe, which emphasized unity, performance incentives, and shared success across all levels of the football structure.

That tradition has since been continued under current Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe, who has maintained the club’s approach of ensuring that major achievements are rewarded collectively.

Sources within the club say the distribution will include not only the playing squad but also the full technical and support staff, underlining the belief that continental success is built on a wider team effort beyond those on the pitch.

The move follows Sundowns’ latest continental triumph, which has further cemented their growing reputation as one of Africa’s most professionally run and ambitious football institutions.

Club officials view the decision as both a reward and a statement — one that highlights the culture of accountability and shared responsibility that has defined Sundowns’ rise on the continent.

The payout is expected to be processed in line with internal club procedures in the coming weeks.
