Mamelodi Sundowns to lodge complaint at FIFA over Lucas Ribeiro’s contract termination influence
South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns could lodge a complaint against clubs purportedly influencing Brazil attacker Lucas Ribeiro to terminate his contract prematurely.
The 26-year-old has been a subject of interest for several European clubs and Qatari outfit following his swashbuckling performance for Sundowns last season.
Ribeiro recently threatened to leave the club, stating that his new club would not be held liable in the dispute between the player and the South African club.
The Brazilian international’s recent comment has sparked speculation, with Sundowns sensing an influence from a foreign club to terminate his contract.
However, Lawyer Mfo Nkontlha from Nkontlha Attorneys explained that the South African club has every right to turn to FIFA, indicating that such actions are classified as a serious violation and could lead to sanctions, including a transfer ban.
“According to FIFA regulations, the Qatari club also risks facing sanctions for interfering in the player’s situation” Nkontlha is quoted as saying.
Previously, Ribeiro was strongly linked with Qatar SC, who have made several offers for the player. Recall that after the Club World Cup, the Brazilian expressed his desire to leave the team and publicly stated his readiness to terminate his contract with the Sundowns.
Ribeiro has been in the books of Sundowns since 2023, with his current contract expected to expire in summer 2028.
