Mamelodi Sundowns have been dealt with a massive blow following an injury to striker Lebo Mothiba at the FIFA Club World Cup tournament.
Mothiba was forced off with an injury when his outfit succumbed to a 4-3 defeat to German giants Borussia Dortmund at the weekend. The forward was subbed off in the 77th-minute in the highly competitive clash.
Providing an injury update, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso said, “As for Lebo, I’m not certain. He’ll have to undergo a medical to determine whether he has a muscular injury — that’s what we need to check. His knee is fine,”
He is expected to undergo medical assessment heading inot the final game against Fluminense.
Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, Sundowns couldn’t find a late equalizer.
Serhou Guirassy’s close-range header and Jobe Bellingham’s sharp finish gave Dortmund a two-goal cushion before halftime. Things got worse for Sundowns when Khuliso Mudau turned the ball into his own net to make it 4-1.
Sundowns refused to go quietly. Iqraam Rayners nodded home from a set piece before substitute Lebo Mothiba grabbed a stoppage-time goal to cut the gap to one.
With one game left, the South African champions now turn their focus to Fluminense in what could be a make-or-break clash. Sundowns will take on Fluminense on June 25th at the Hard Rock Stadium.
