Sundowns upset Esperance

Mamelodi Sundowns took a crucial step toward the final of the CAF Champions League after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Espérance de Tunis in the first leg of their semi-final encounter in Tunis.

The Brazilians delivered a composed and disciplined performance on hostile territory, with Brayan León emerging as the match-winner thanks to his decisive second-half strike.

After a cagey first half where both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances, Sundowns returned from the break with renewed purpose. Their persistence paid off in the 51st minute when León slotted home the only goal of the game, silencing the home crowd and handing the visitors a priceless advantage.

Espérance pushed forward in search of an equalizer at the Stade olympique Hammadi-Agrebi, but Sundowns’ well-drilled defense held firm under increasing pressure. The South African giants showed tactical maturity, maintaining their shape and frustrating the Tunisian side’s attacking efforts.

However, the game took a dramatic turn late on when Grant Kekana was shown a red card in the 84th minute, forcing Sundowns to see out the closing stages with ten men. The dismissal handed momentum to Espérance, who surged forward in the final minutes, but they were unable to break through Sundowns’ resilient backline.

Despite the late setback, Sundowns held on to secure a valuable away win and a clean sheet—an outcome that puts them in a strong position heading into the return leg on home soil.

With the tie finely poised, all eyes will now turn to the second leg, where Sundowns will look to capitalize on their narrow advantage, while Espérance aim to overturn the deficit and keep their continental dreams alive.

The return fixture between Sundowns and Esperance has been scheduled to take place in South Africa next weekend.
