Mamelodi Sundowns have officially welcomed Argentine midfielder Matias Esquivel to their squad after completing his signing, AfricaSoccer.com can report
The 24-year-old, who recently arrived at OR Tambo International Airport, joins from Club Atletico Lanus in the Argentine Primera Division for US$2.5 million.
Esquivel becomes Sundowns’ second signing in the January transfer window after penning a four-and-half years contract, following the acquisition of right-back Zuko Mdunyelwa from Chippa United.
As the sixth South American player in the Tshwane giants’ squad, Esquivel joins the ranks of Erwin Saavedra (Bolivia), Marcelo Allende (Chile), Junior Mendieta (Argentina), Gaston Sirino (Uruguay), and Lucas Ribeiro (Brazil).
His primary position lies in central midfield, where he will compete with players like Teboho Mokoena, Bathusi Aubaas, Sipho Mbule, and Bongani Zungu.
Notably, Esquivel’s versatility allows him to play as an attacking midfielder or a right winger, depending on the team’s tactical setup.
Having played for Club Atletico Talleres and later joining Lanus on loan, Esquivel boasts a career record of 126 appearances in all competitions in Argentina, contributing to 29 goals.
The midfielder, with 13 goals and 16 assists, is poised to make his debut for Sundowns on February 14, resuming league action against Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium after the 2023 AFCON break.
