Sundowns in talks with coach Cardoso over contract extension

Mamelodi Sundowns have opened contract renewal talks with head coach Miguel Cardoso following the club’s triumphant CAF Champions League campaign.

The Brazilians are still celebrating their latest continental success after overcoming AS FAR in Morocco to secure the prestigious African title, marking another historic milestone for the Chloorkop-based giants.

Speaking after the club success, Tlhopie Motsepe, who is chairman of Sundowns openly acknowledged Cardoso presence at the club, while disclosing talks over a new deal with the Portuguese tactician.

“I believe that where the club is heading right now is in a positive direction, and we will obviously go into the next few months now and have discussions, but definitely the discussions are already in a much more positive position than when we had discussions before the coach even joined the club. I think that’s as far as I should say out of respect for the coach and the discussions we are going to have as a board,” Motsepe stated.

The chairman’s comments strongly suggest that Sundowns are eager to retain the services of the Portuguese tactician following his immediate impact at the club. Since taking charge, Cardoso has managed to guide the team to continental success while maintaining the club’s high standards domestically and internationally.

Winning the CAF Champions League has further strengthened Cardoso’s standing within the club hierarchy and among supporters, especially considering the immense expectations that come with coaching one of Africa’s biggest football institutions.

Sundowns’ latest triumph has also reinforced their growing dominance on the continent. The victory over ASFAR secured the club’s second CAF Champions League title in a decade, adding to the historic maiden triumph they achieved in 2016 under former coach Pitso Mosimane.

That first continental success transformed Sundowns into a respected African powerhouse, and their latest title now confirms the club’s consistency at the highest level of African football. Over the years, the Pretoria giants have invested heavily in building a squad capable of competing with the continent’s elite, and their recent success is being viewed as the reward for long-term planning and ambition.

The atmosphere around the club is currently one of celebration and optimism, with players, technical staff, and supporters embracing another golden chapter in Sundowns’ history. Their triumph in Morocco has once again elevated the club’s status across Africa and strengthened belief that the current squad can continue dominating for years to come.

For Cardoso, the achievement represents a major milestone in his coaching career. Winning Africa’s premier club competition in such a short period has significantly enhanced his reputation and further justified Sundowns’ decision to entrust him with one of the biggest jobs in African football.

The expected contract discussions are now likely to focus on extending stability within the technical team as Sundowns prepare for future domestic campaigns, continental title defenses, and possible participation on the global stage.

With the club enjoying one of the most successful periods in its history, retaining Cardoso appears to be a key priority for the Sundowns hierarchy. The chairman’s remarks indicate that both parties are aligned in their ambitions, and there is growing confidence that an agreement could eventually be reached.

As celebrations continue following another memorable CAF Champions League triumph, attention will gradually shift toward the future — and whether Miguel Cardoso will remain the man tasked with leading Mamelodi Sundowns into their next era of continental dominance.
