Mamelodi Sundowns has a great future – RB Leipzig captain Willi Orban after friendly loss

RB Leipzig captain Willi Orban has praised Mamelodi Sundowns following their impressive 3-1 comeback win over the Bundesliga side in a friendly match at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday evening.

The South African champions produced a spirited second-half performance to overturn the result and secure a statement victory in front of a lively home crowd that created a vibrant atmosphere throughout the encounter.

Speaking after the match, Orban described the experience as memorable, highlighting both the quality of the opposition and the electric support from the stands.

“Overall, I think we had a great time here in South Africa, thanks for having us, it was a great experience to play in front of this crowd, unbelievable atmosphere, thank you so much for your support, all the best for the future, thank you so much,” Orban told SABC Sport.

He went further to commend the Pretoria-based side, suggesting they possess the quality to compete at a high level in continental football.

“As the coach said, it was an unbelievable atmosphere. Tough game, good opponent, really good in possession, really good in positioning.

“I think congratulations to the win to the Sundowns and also to winning the Champions League, big quality team, and I think also a team with a big future.”

RB Leipzig head coach Ole Werner also reflected positively on the occasion, noting the contrast in atmosphere compared to Europe while praising the educational value of the match for his younger players.

“It’s quite different, but as the captain said, a tremendous crowd we liked to play, liked to be in the country, all the best for the guys,” Werner said.

He emphasised that the fixture provided valuable exposure for his squad, which included several Under-19 players.

“I think it’s just a big experience, especially for the young guys. We had a lot of guys from the under-19 team today on the pitch.

“So, I think it’s important for their development to play in front of that crowd. So, it’s just a big learning,” he said.
